Answered By Niles Hanssen, Editor Lee Petty is the first Daytona 500 winner, defeating rival Johnny Beauchamp on February 22, 1959. Both Petty and Beauchamp were lapping Joe Weatherly's car at the finish line, and race officials initially declared Beauchamp as the winner.
