What type of safety precautions are taken for the NASCAR drivers?

Answered By Niles Hanssen, Editor

After the fatal accident that killed Dale Earnhardt on the last lap of the Daytona 500 race series last 2001, Nascar employed different mandatory safety precautions. These are the following:

- The driver seat is one of the concerns in safety racing. Most seats that are used before are wrapped around the rib cage of the driver. Thus, it results to the spread of the load over the entire rib cage which can cause breakage. New car race seats are now wrap around the driver's shoulders which better support because of its durability.

- The seat belt used in race cars is now much stronger than a normal seat belt. It is now of 5 or 6 point harness which has 2 straps coming down over the driver's shoulders, 2 straps around the waste, and another 2 that comes up between the legs.

- Nascar introduced roof flaps to race cars in order to prevent cars on getting airborne and possibly flipping down the race track. These are placed into the pockets in the roof of the race car.

- Most tracks are now installed with softer barriers and walls which are called SAFER or Steel and Foam Energy Reduction. They tend to absorb the great impact of the cars at high speed in contrast with the concrete wall which absorbs little or negligible impact.

- The pit crew members are required to wear helmets and full fire-proof suits. The refueller is required to wear a fire apron as well as the fire-proof suit. Tire changers are required to wear safety glasses to avoid possible eye injuries that may come from lug nuts thrown off the car.
